google+ smbIt was a long anticipated move, but, finally, Google allowed businesses, brands and any non-human entity to participate in its Google+ social network, through new Google+ Pages that are launching today. Here is a link to the official Google blog post.

What does it mean for your business? You should be thinking about starting a Google+Page for your company and use it similarly to the one you are running on Facebook (assuming that you have one). I recommend to simply carry over the content from your business’ Facebook page over to Google+ to save the time and cost, and get in the game quickly to get some learnings and enhance later. Remember, the key is to be found whether it is through Search, Social or Mobile so you should view Google+ as an another, emerging channel to connect with your customers.

Hi Al – valid point – I recently guest lectured in an MBA class in New York and I asked the students how many were on Facebook and they all raised their hands – when I asked how many were on Google+ – 2/3 raised their hands – then I asked the students to keep their hands up if they use G+ as much as Facebook and everybody lowered their hands – the lesson here is that a bunch of people created Google+ accounts BUT the usage is very minimal compared to Facebook – I would say G+ is worth testing but if you are a small business tight on resources, you are better off narrowing your focus to Facebook and Twitter, where you are going to get a better engagement and scale
