“This is your last chance. After this there is no turning back. You take the blue pill: the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill: you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.” – Morpheus, The Matrix (source)

Red Pill, Blue Pill?

The terms, popularized in science fiction culture, derive from the 1999 film The Matrix. In the movie, the main character Neo is offered the choice between a red pill and a blue pill. The blue pill would allow him to remain in the fabricated reality of the Matrix, therefore living the “illusion of ignorance”, while the red pill would lead to his escape from the Matrix and into the real world, therefore living the “truth of reality.” (source: Wikipedia)

2014 has been a year of the Matrix Moment for me. After eight years of successful career in corporate America I left a senior management position at a global digital agency to live a life of an entrepreneur. Red pill.

I started two businesses, made them profitable, and set out to start a couple of new ventures… but today I want to share with you the four quotes that inspired me to build SearchDecoder.com.

SearchDecoder was founded in 2012, and started as a small community blog that grew rapidly to a leading destination for bootstrap marketing ideas for entrepreneurs. For a long time, it existed solely to provide value to the community. Today, it’s a fast-growth and profitable business.

What I’ve learnt from flying solo is that when you grow fast, you need to evolve and constantly rebrand yourself to remain relevant in terms of communicating the value you initially set out to provide. As your audience becomes more mainstream, you need to build on your niche that got you of the ground so that you can gradually provide a broader perspective, with a unique point of view. It’s hard. You need to pivot often, and learn on the fly.

Inspired by today’s greatest Internet business thinkers, I’ve focused SearchDecoder on growth, entrepreneurship, Internet marketing, and mentorship.

These quotes are fantastic! I love and agree with every one, although they’re all new to me, so thanks so much for sharing!

I love the idea that every person is a media company. That is so true! We’re always marketing ourselves, whether we know it or not. A knowledge of marketing can improve every area of our lives, I really believe that. I’ll definitely be sharing this!

    Hi Matt,

These quotes are good money. My fave is probably Seth Godin’s: “Instead of trying to get more customers take care of the ones you already have.”

This is solid gold. I do my best to take care of my clients, my readers and my friends. This is the key to running a prospering business. Focus less on MORE and more on what you have. Do your best job servicing and helping folks who’ve committed to you. Then they’ll spread the word to like-minded people who’ll hire you, or read your blog, or who’ll buy your eBook.

Tapping into ultra powerful word of mouth marketing becomes a breeze when you do your best to overdeliver with current clients. As Seth says, when you devote your creative energies to helping your clients and readers, they’ll take care of the “more” part for you. I keep reaching out and meeting more people but my intent is to make an impact wherever I show up to allow my network to spread the word for me too.

Another fave quote – gotta add it – “You have to do it by yourself, but you can’t do it alone.” ~ Bob Proctor…..a cool mind bender which shows that growing a business requires both an independent streak, by being a self starter, as well as being a team player.

    Thanks much Matt.
